Virgo: The Stomach

By Esperanza Milla

Tell me of the peat,

the heady, compact earth drunk

with old energy.

How it weighed you down

with grain to burden the sweet-

breads at your center

how it leached hardness

from your bones, left you bloated,

upturned like a fish.

Tell me how to see

the preservation burrow,

void of the death-thieves,

no maggots, only

the orange peel, citric-wasted,

the hook and the bait

and the epilogue

fish with your lithosphere skin:

the hardest to gut.
